XIII International Scientific and Practical Conference «Marine Research and Education
(MARESEDU - 2024)»
Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center (hereinafter – LMSU MRC) in collaboration with UNESCO-Moscow State University Educational and Scientific Center for Marine Geology and Geophysics takes this opportunity to invite you to become a speaker/participant of the XIII International Scientific and Practical Conference «Marine Research and Education – 2024: International Round table «Global Biodiversity Goals Achievement: Marine Dimension»». The conference is co-organized by the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Geological, Geographical and Biological Faculties of Lomonosov Moscow State University, the Pertsov White Sea Biological Station, as well as the Marine Mammals Council.
ABOUT MARESEDU 2024
In 2024, the Conference focuses on traditional MARESEDU topics. It is proposed to discuss the current state and prospects for the development of Oceans` comprehensive research, current problems of rational environmental management and biodiversity conservation in marine areas, exploration of continental shelf and Oceans bottom resources, scientific achievements in the field of marine geological exploration and environmental monitoring, modern methodological approaches towards vast marine areas using various methods, problems of sustainable development of marine and coastal ecosystems, organizing and conducting complex expeditionary research with involvement of students, problems of teaching the «marine disciplines», as well as issues of organizing students’ field practices.

The conference will include plenary sessions, scientific sessions, round tables and youth competition. Prior the conference, it is planned to conduct courses of lectures and practical seminars from experts in the field of marine sciences.

In 2024, the conference continues to be an official event of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. MARESEDU's partner is the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, represented by the Department for Coordination of Activities of Institutions in the Field of Technical and Geosciences, Fleet, Test Sites and Expeditions.

Main goals of the conference include information exchange and efforts coordination of the scientific and university communities in organizing interdisciplinary marine research and integrating practice with in marine science education.

The MARESEDU working language is Russian, no translation provided. The round table “Global Biodiversity Goals Achievement: Marine Dimension” in English, no translation provided.

ROUND TABLES AND SEMINARS
«Global Biodiversity Goals Achievement: Marine Dimension»
Rationale:
The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) adopted at the 15th United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity in December 2022, includes four long-term goals up to 2050 and 23 global targets for urgent action until 2030. Almost all of these goals have relevance to various aspects of the marine environment. Essential part of MARESEDU sessions addresses important aspects for the KMGBF implementation on marine issues at national and international levels.
Proposed topics to be discussed:
  • marine related elements of the KMGBF;
  • State of the marine biodiversity in the world;
  • Addressing direct causes of marine biodiversity loss (alien invasive species, pollution, overfishing and by-catch, use of marine waters, climate change);
  • Ecologically significant marine areas;
  • Environmental monitoring of the marine ecosystems;
  • Indicators of the marine biodiversity;
  • Ensuring environmental safety of the Northern Sea Route as a contribution to the KMGBF implementation in the Arctic.
Date: 28 october - 01 november (date to be confirmed)
Location: Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, RAS
and online

Format:
  • Oral presentations
  • 2 sessions for 5 speakers each with a 30 minutes break in between
  • Each presentation for 15 minutes
  • 20 minutes for questions/discussion at the end of each session

Organizer: Lomonosov Moscow State University Marine Research Center
Registration:
No participation fee.

Upon the registration, you will receive a confirmation E-mail as per the E-mail address you specified in the registration form. Shall you have any questions about the event, program and presenters kindly contact a.dkhar@marine-rc.ru.
Goal:
Review the key areas and work experience in the field of conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity internationally and in Russia and its contribution to achieving the KMGBF goals and targets.
The round table is to determine general direction of discussions at the MARESEDU various sessions and present the discussion results in the context of global goals achievement.

Proposed topics to be discussed:
  • Main achievements of the Class@Baikal projects
  • Areas for growth and improvement of the Class@Baikal project
  • Tips and recommendations to be provided to friends and colleagues decided to pursue romantic and adventurous dream of pure science and teaching the best students without funding and administrative support for many years
